Redwood varsity baseball leads the Marin County Athletic League (MCAL) as they continue their undefeated season. On March 6, the Giants played San Rafael, winning 4-2. The Giants have historically dominated MCAL baseball, and that trend has continued this season. The team’s current record sits at 3-0-1, including a tie against Acalanes last week.
Senior Theo Trono had two stolen bases, one run and one RBI against San Rafael. Trono credited the team’s underclassmen for helping drive the early success this season.
“[Having new] underclassmen specifically [has helped]. We have a lot this year, seven or eight underclassmen, who are putting in a lot of work, like in practice, and it’s showing in the games, they’re really flipping the order for us and when they get on [the field],” Trono said.
While the Giants have led the field this season, they still rely on strong team values to get them through games and stay consistent. When asked how the boys prepare for games, Trono emphasized the team’s gameday mindset.
“We take every game seriously. We don’t go into a game saying oh this team’s bad, you never know, in baseball, you have a lot of on and off days. I think we still practice really hard no matter what,” Trono said.
With that being said, their team shows unmatched chemistry on the field. In addition to senior leadership, underclassmen were an important factor in the game. Sophomore and infielder Tommy Moseley reflected on the upperclassmen’s efforts to guide their teammates.
“As an underclassman, [upperclassmen] definitely help us to work hard. The upperclassmen push us just the right amount, knowing when to get on us and when to relax, and I think that’s been working, just having us all be a team and pushing each other to be our best,” Moseley said.
The giants are set to play two games against Novato next week, which is currently 3-0, making it a competitive game that will surely set records.
